  • burning pain groin to upper thigh

I am a 57 yo woman with burning pain in my abdominal/groin area for over a month. Pain first started in my left foot 4 months ago (old injury), started spreading up my legs and now in my abdomen. Had an EMG of my legs and it was negative. I have seen 2 neurologists and 2 pain specialists. The burning pain in my abdomen is getting worse. Today I saw a GI who pressed my abdomen while I was lying down, there was pain but he could not tell me the source. He is sending me for a CT scan of my abdomen, with contrast. I found a 2011 NY Times article online about hidden hernias and wonder if I have one. What kind of doctor do I need to see to diagnose a hernia? I live in NYC.

There is brian P Jacobs in NYC. He is a hernia specialist and can help detect or rule out a hidden hernia. A MRI is probably a better test to have. Most surgeons will probably say that a hernia wont refer pain below the knee. I am not a doctor but the pain could he related to back pain which can radiate to the groin, leg and below the knee and a MRI of the back can help. There is a dr. Michael weinberger at Columbia Presbyterian pain management and that paractice specializes in back issues and can help rule out the back.
    Hope this helps.

Thank you for your reply Jnomesh. I had a CT scan of my abdomen yesterday. I had a lower back MRI that was done before the pain in my abdomen got worse and it was negative. I do have small twinges in my back but the pain is mostly in the front left and center of my abdomen, below the belly button. The burning pain in my abdomen and legs gets worse when I sit and gets better when I lie down. I am having trouble finding a urogynecologist in NYC. I will look up Brian Jacobs, thank you so much!!
